"Puppy Uglies" or "Pom Uglies" is a phrase used to describe a phase of life every pomeranian goes through as they grow from puppy to adult. At around 3-4 months of age you will notice your furbaby is starting to loose their coat and certain colors often become dull and faded as the "puppy coat" dies. The pup will continue to loose its coat until about 6-7 months of age, by then they can often look like Chihuahuas rather then poms ;)
Certain colors will also do some changing during this maturation period of a poms life. Sables start out with alot of sable as pups but during their uglies most of the sable has fallen out and the base coat color with brighten. When the adult coat comes in the sable will return but there usually is not as much of it as there was in puppyhood. Creams can turn out a darker cream in adulthood, oranges a brighter hue, black/chocolate/blue & tans can have more tan then before, solid blacks/chocolates/blues can develop a little white on their chins. Those are all normal changes of color that happen in varing degress to each indivdual as they grow up.
This is all normal!! Your puppy is not sick!! Before you know it you will see new adult coat starting to grow in. By 1yr of age your puppy will have a lovely full adult coat. It'll be gone again for their 1yr shed shortly after turning a year old. BUT this time it won't be nearly as bad of a shed as the puppy uglies and it won't last as long either :)
The next time that the coat comes in it will be fuller then the first time and most poms do not reach their fullest coat potencial until they are 2 years old. A fixed pom weather it be male or female will shed seasonally as will an intact male, but an intact female will shed every time she goes through a heat cycle.
Below are pictures of my own poms as they went through their uglies. Some take it worse then others ;) Click the pictures to see them full size.
